‘Heide’ is an abbreviation of Heidelberg, the local township, and is the name coined by founders John and Sunday Reed after they purchased the property and original farmhouse in 1934. Since that time the suburban boundaries have been changed, and Heide’s address is now part of Bulleen rather than Heidelberg.

Why is Heide called Heide?

Heide Modern was designed by David McGlashan of the architectural firm, McGlashan and Everist, and completed in 1968. The brief from John and Sunday Reed was for a ‘gallery to be lived in’. The original Heide Galleries building was designed by Andrew Andersons of Peddle Thorp Architects, creating a new series of gallery spaces adjoining the Heide Modern building. O’Connor + Houle Architecture redeveloped the Heide Galleries in 2005–06, adding the Albert and Barbara Tucker Gallery, the Tucker Study Centre and Kerry Gardner and Andrew Myer Project Gallery; and designing renovations to the main galleries and Heide Shop; and new amenities for storage and staff accommodation.

Who were the architects of Heide Modern and Heide Galleries?

Heide is a not-for-profit entity formed in 1981 for the purposes of operating and managing the assets of Heide, which were purchased by the State Government on behalf of the people of Victoria. Heide’s income is derived from a range of sources including government grants, philanthropic and commercial activities.

Heide plans and develops its exhibition program two to four years in advance. The program represents both modern and contemporary art, drawn from the Heide collection and from external sources. While the focus is on Australian art, the exhibition program also includes some international projects.

How far ahead do you plan your exhibitions?

We are happy to circulate information about websites or images to Heide curators for their information. Heide’s curatorial team is always interested in receiving material from artists introducing their practice. In addition, the team welcomes updates from artists on new projects or exhibitions in the form of electronic invitations, publications, newsletters, flyers and website details.

The Heide collection comprises over 3,500 works in all media, and includes a significant representation of Australian modern art by key artists from the 1930s to the 1960s. It offers perspectives on modern and contemporary art practice as well as Heide history. The Heide archives include significant holdings of artists’ papers, and documents relating to the professional activities of Heide founders John and Sunday Reed.

How do I get to Heide?

Heide is open every Tuesday – Friday, 10am – 4pm and Saturday and Sunday, 10am – 5pm. Heide is also open on all Public Holidays apart from Good Friday and Christmas Day.

What days are you open?

Yes, there is an admission charge that covers entry to all three buildings and current exhibitions: there are no separate tickets for the different parts of the museum. Please make sure to check dates of exhibitions before your visit as one or more buildings may periodically be closed for exhibition changeover.

What is the definition of a concession?

We recommend that you allow at least an hour and a half to see all of the exhibitions. Extra time is suggested to visit the sixteen acres of sculpture park and gardens

How long should I allow for my visit?

Photography is generally allowed without flash or the use of a tripod or mono pod, unless otherwise indicated in the gallery space.

Can I take photographs, video or film?

There is limited seating throughout the gallery spaces. Portable gallery stools are available for use within the gallery upon request. See our friendly staff if you would like to borrow one during your visit.

Is there seating in the galleries?

The Heide Galleries Information Desk has limited cloaking facilities available, free of charge.

Is cloaking provided?

There are daily 2pm tours that vary each day covering exhibitions, history, gardens and sculpture. Please see the <a href="https://www.heide.com.au/events/">Programs &amp; </a>Events page for details. Please note if tours are held in the gallery you will require a ticket.

Where is the closest parking at Heide?

Heide has two wheelchairs available to borrow, please call ahead on 9850 1500 to book for your visit.

Heide is a public sculpture park and heritage garden as opposed to a botanical garden, and as such, plaques are not in use.
